Geography
Koshigaya City is located in the southeast of Saitama Prefecture, and is about 25km from
central Tokyo.
The city is situated on an alluvial plain in the basin of the Nakagawa River, which is wedged
between the Omiya Plateau (Omiya-Daichi) and Shimousa Plateau (Shimousa-Daichi). As well as
the Nakagawa River, a number of other rivers and irrigation canals run through the city. These
include the Moto-Arakawa, Furu-Tonegawa, Ayasegawa, and Niigatagawa Rivers, as well as the
Kasai, Sueda, and Yakota Irrigation Canals
History
During the Edo Period (1603 - 1867), a part of the area that is now Koshigaya City prospered as a
post town on the Nikko Road (Nikko-Kaido), which was one of the five major roads built to connect
Edo (old Tokyo) with a number of locations throughout Japan.
A new Koshigaya Town was formed in 1954 when the old Koshigaya Town, another town and eight
villages merged. The town and villages that merged with the old Koshigaya Town were Osawa Town
(Osawa-Machi), Sakurai Village (Sakurai-Mura), Obukuro Village (Obukuro-Mura), Niigata Village
(Niigata-Mura), Ogishima Village (Ogishima-Mura), Dewa Village (Dewa-Mura), Mashibayashi Village
(Mashibayashi-Mura), Gamo Village (Gamo-Mura) and Osagami Village (Osagami-Mura). Then in
1958, the new Koshigaya Town was renamed Koshigaya City, and became the 22nd city in Saitama
Prefecture.
The connection and commencement of shared usage of the Hibiya Subway Line and the Tobu
Railways - Isesaki Line in 1962, made Koshigaya City a favourable place to live for people working
in Tokyo, and the city’s population grew steadily. Subsequently, the Japan National Railways (now
Japan Rail) - Musashino Line was opened, the city's facilities and infrastructure were improved,
and in 2003, the connection and commencement of shared usage of the Tobu Railways - Isesaki
Line and Hanzomon Subway Line took place.
At present, Koshigaya City is a designated semi-autonomous city, and is continuing to develop as
a core city in the southeastern part of Saitama Prefecture.
